For the latest Destination Spotlight that we’re sharing with you, we’re going to focus on the quintessential seaside city of Newport, Rhode Island. A favorite of ours! Known as the “Sailing Capital of the World” Newport is the essence of New England — think sandy beaches, rich maritime history, fresh and delicious seafood right off the boats, Colonial-era buildings, shopping on Thames Street and warm, friendly locals.
Fort Adams is a popular attraction and is the largest coastal fortification in the U.S. Visitors can explore the soldier’s barracks, the tunnel system, and elevated bastions that offer spectacular views of the waterfront. On display are exhibits that examine military culture and over 180 years of American history and military engineering. If you book one of their daily tours, they are conducted outdoors, so dress accordingly for a New England fall which although warm, can be windy.
Another popular pastime of visiting Newport are the historic mansions along Bellevue Avenue, where you’ll see how the wealthy lived during Newport’s Gilded Age. Believe it or not these mansions were “summer cottages!” American families the likes of the Vanderbilts, the Astors, and the Morgans all had homes here.
Tennis fans will enjoy a visit to the International Tennis Hall of Fame where you will see memorabilia representing decades of tennis achievements and if you’re inclined, you can sign-up to get some court time on the famous grass courts!
There are plenty of hotels and quaint New England B&B’s to stay in and no shortage of great restaurants with seafood topping the list from fine dining to local seafood shacks.
No trip to Newport would be complete without a walk along the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk. The walk runs along the eastern shore so on one side are stunning ocean views, while on the other are some of the Gilded Age mansions tucked into the cliffs. This is a beautiful walk that is unique to Newport.
If you’re seeking something different, take in the National Museum of American Illustration in the Vernon Court mansion. It’s the first American museum devoted exclusively to the illustrated art. You’ll see more than 2,000 works of art by well-known American artists like Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and many others.
Rhode Island may be the smallest state in our nation, but it’s far from the least populated and Newport is where it all started. We think there’s more to do, see and enjoy in Newport than many places around the country and fall is the perfect time to explore and enjoy without the summer crowds.
