Where will your Travelpro luggage take you next? We think September and October are perfect months for a getaway to the northeast and we encourage you to spend some time in Portland, Maine! When many people think of Maine, fresh lobster, crashing surf on rugged, rocky coastlines and lighthouses often come to mind.

Yes, these are some of the most authentic experiences of this northernmost state east of the Great Lakes, but a vacation to Portland also provides visitors with cultural, and historic experiences that satisfy beyond the outdoor adventures and landscape Maine is commonly known for.

For example, if you’re a foodie, Bon Appetit named Portland its Top “Foodiest City” because with well over 200 restaurants to choose from, you may be surprised to know this city has more per capita than any other place in the U.S. Serving up every cuisine that you can think of, you’ll enjoy traditional low key seafood shacks, to award-winning fine dining.

Greater Portland’s entertainment and cultural scene is known for its excellence in theater, music and nationally recognized art galleries. Downtown Portland’s “First Friday Art Walks” is a free monthly cultural event where galleries, museums, and others open their doors so visitors have a chance to see local venues, meet the artists and immerse in the creative community while enjoying various exhibits. Commercial Street is lined with cobblestone streets, quaint/charming buildings and architectural gems like the Customs House that will take you back in time.

We highly recommend the Portland Observatory Museum where you’ll find guided tours of the only remaining historic maritime signal tower in the United States offering spectacular views of Portland, Back Cove, Mt. Washington and Casco Bay. Bring a camera! You’ll also get a fantastic glimpse into Maine’s historic maritime heritage too.

There’s, of course, no shortage of active water sports, boating, sandy beaches, like Crescent Beach, biking and great hiking options. Early Fall, after schools are back in session, is a great time to visit Old Orchard’s Pier which extends nearly 500 feet out over the Atlantic Ocean. There are shops, restaurants, fishing, concerts and nightlife, games and entertainment to enjoy.

Portland has plenty of quaint inns and B&B’s but if you prefer a more modern hotel or resort or want to earn you loyalty points, you’ll find them there as well.

Since Maine is a top summer destination, prices will begin to drop quickly after Labor Day — making it a great destination for September/October travel on the wallet as well!
