Bring This, Not That: Duffel Bags versus Rolling Suitcases

January 27, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Are rolling suitcases the better choice for business travel? Or can a case be made for duffel bags? Is one a business-only choice, while the other is only for weekends and trips to the gym? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each bag.

30 inch Tpro Bold Drop Bottom Rolling Duffel

30 inch Tpro Bold Drop Bottom Rolling Duffel

Duffel bags can be a handy alternative for the casual traveler who doesn’t want to lug around all the infrastructure associated with a rolling suitcase. They tend to be lighter and are sometimes easier to maneuver than their upright counterparts in the luggage world.

Better yet, some even come with wheels. A big duffel bag on wheels is narrower than a medium or large suitcase and it could even be a little easier to roll around a crowded airport.

Despite the general lack of structure with a duffel bag, you might have more organizational options in terms of little pockets throughout: on the exterior, the top, the bottom, and the sides. Some duffels even offer the benefit of a divider panel to separate the bag into two main compartments.

TravelPro offers a drop bottom duffel. There’s a large upper compartment where you put the vast majority of your stuff and then down below there’s another compartment that’s not quite as large. It’s a great area to store things like shoes or oddly-shaped items. If you don’t want to use that bottom compartment, you can also zip out the interior separator and just have one big packing space.

Travelpro 21 inch Blue Marquis Spinner

Travelpro 21 inch Blue Marquis Spinner

That said, a traditional suitcase usually offers small garment sleeves where you can pack your dress clothes. These sleeves can prevent your clothing from getting wrinkled and protect it from shoes.

Also, rolling suitcases often offer an expansion feature that duffels don’t always have. TravelPro does offer a duffel with expansion, but your average duffels do not. Some of our rolling suitcase models also have expansion features, if you need to pack some additional items.

Bottom line: Duffels can help give a feeling of freedom to your travel experience. A duffel is great for a totally casual trip, especially if you have a lot of shoes or a lot of power cords or odd shaped items. Duffels are great for when traveling with gifts.

If you’re doing a more formal trip, or you want to wheel your bag instead of carry it around, you’ll probably want to stick with traditional luggage, and use the rolling suitcase.

Which do you prefer? Are you a casual duffel-er or do you prefer the tradition of the suitcase? Leave us a comment and let us hear from you.

Bring This, Not That: Backpacks Versus Duffel Bags

February 25, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

We were recently reminded of why we like being a luggage company after reading Mark Eveleigh’s post on his blog, Kitbaggers.com, extolling the virtue of kitbags (duffel bags) over backpacks.

The decision whether to carry that weight on my back for the next few months or to simply haul it on a kitbag with wheels is a no-brainer.
. . .
Before you head for the airport next time, at least spare a thought for which sort of bag is suited to your trip. On a relatively long adventure travel jaunt, there will be relatively few incidences when a backpack is preferable. There will be countless times, however, when you’ll whisper up a prayer of thanks for the foresight that turned you into a kitbagger. From the airport to the bus, to the hostel, to the bus, to the beach, to another hostel, to another bus, to a national park a tough, well-made kitbag on heavy-duty wheels is the easiest way to transport your kit across all but the roughest of dirt tracks.

Tpro Bold Duffel, open side

Tpro Bold kitbag, er duffel bag, can open from the side or top. It lets you sort items into compartments, and gives you easy access. Plus it rolls, so you don’t have to carry it.

Kitbag is a British word for a duffel bag, and there are several styles of kitbag — er, duffel bags — that have wheels on them. They’re easy to pick up and carry when necessary, and even easier to pull along behind you, just like a regular piece of Rollaboard® luggage. Travelpro offers a wide variety of rolling duffel bag styles in the T-Pro Bold, Platinum Magna and National Geographic luggage collections.

If you’ve ever hauled a 60-pound backpack for miles through Europe, South America, or Africa, you know how hot and sweaty you can get by toting around three month’s worth of belongings on your back. But pulling your bag behind you lets you not only carry more, but you can transport said bag more easily.

Bottom Line

Backpacks are great. They’re a lot of fun, they’re great for hiking and camping, and they have a secret gypsy vagabond appeal for many of us. We even make backpacks for people to haul their laptops, tablets and paperwork. It may not be trekking the rainforest of Chiapas or the streets of Paris, but you can still feel like you’re there, even when you’re just walking to your car after work.

But when it comes down to it, if you need something rugged, tough, and built to last, a rolling duffel bag kitbag is your best bet. They’re soft, so you can overstuff them. They have plenty of compartments, so you can keep items separated by function. And they open at the top so you can easily dig out an extra shirt or your book for the plane.

Mark wrote several posts for us in 2010 after hauling some of our T-Pro Bold rolling duffel bags (kitbags) through Chiapas, Mexico and down the Amazon River. We figured if anyone knows about proper adventure travel gear, it’s bound to be Mark.

So when he said kitbags, not backpacks, we wanted to pass on his thoughts to adventure traveler within us all.

Travelpro Announces its Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Invention of the Rollaboard

January 10, 2012 by · 2 Comments

A Modern Luggage Innovation that Changed the Way we Travel

(Boca Raton, Fla. – Jan. 9, 2012)—Travelpro will celebrate its 25th Anniversary of the invention of Rollaboard luggage throughout 2012 with an array of promotions, dynamic new product introductions, special events and media co-ops.

It all started when Robert Plath, a pilot for Northwest Airlines, changed the physical orientation of luggage from horizontal to vertical, added large wheels and an extension handle; hence, inventing the Rollaboard, an entirely new way to transport personal belongings while traveling.Travelpro Rollaboard Luggage - 18" Business Plus Rollaboard

“When Travelpro founder, Robert Path, invented the original Rollaboard in his garage in 1987, he not only changed the way people traveled but his new invention helped energize the entire travel goods industry,” said Scott Applebee, Vice President of Marketing for Travelpro. “The Rollaboard also led to the creation of the company, Travelpro, which immediately became an industry leader due to his powerful innovation.”

Plath founded Travelpro and began providing Rollaboard luggage to airline flight crews and pilots. The idea was so universally successful with the airline crews, Travelpro launched the product commercially through retail stores in the early 90’s and has been changing the way consumers travel ever since.

In 1994, Travelpro was ranked as one of the fastest growing private companies by Inc. Magazine. Recently, Inc. Magazine listed Plath’s Rollaboard invention as one of the top innovations in modern history. In November 2011, in a Discovery Channel program entitled, “What’s America Worth?” the invention was highlighted as one of the leading examples of how innovation adds value to a country’s net worth. Numerous awards have followed including winning the 2009 and 2010 Leading Edge Award from Executive Travel Magazine for “The Best Carry-on Case.” Its luggage also had a co-starring role in the multi-Oscar nominated film “Up in the Air”, starring George Clooney.

Today, Travelpro has continued to grow its reputation of innovation and style as one of the leading luggage brands worldwide. Travelpro luggage is now used by over 80 airlines globally and is sold commercially throughout the world.

Travelpro manufactures numerous luggage collections including Platinum 7, Crew™ 8, FlightPro LITE, Walkabout Lite 4, Maxlite 2 Rollaboards and Spinners, Executive Pro™ and Tpro Bold ™. These collections represent the best of the best for innovation, quality and value. Additionally, Travelpro purchased the well-respected Atlantic Luggage and Austin House to fortify its brand presence in the Luggage and Travel Accessories industry.

What Luggage Is Best For Car Trips?

July 21, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Over these last several months, we’ve chronicled how Travelpro rollaboards meet the varied needs of air travelers. For international business travelers and vacationing families alike, we’ve illustrated how our lightweight, durable bags maximize travel enjoyment by minimizing airport hassles.

But, the advantages of Travelpro luggage aren’t limited to air travelers. To anyone about to embark on an overnight car trip — whether you’re a lone salesman chasing your monthly quota or overwhelmed parents transporting a van full of kids to Disney World — we’ve got a range of bags that will make your life easier.

While airline size restrictions require air travelers to pack light, “road warriors” have much more latitude in the number of possessions they can take on their trip. Enter Travelpro’s comprehensive line of spacious garment bags, and versatile duffels and backpacks.

These expandable bags measure up to 28″ in length, and can easily accommodate a week’s worth or more of clothing and belongings.

The key to traveling with a large wardrobe is intelligent design and capacity. Most rollaboards offer roomy main compartments which expand 2.5 inches, maximizing space and packing flexibility. Some rollaboards and garment bags also feature a removable suiter sleeve and wrinkle-free foam bars which minimizesthe wrinkling of dresses, suits and other formal wear.

If your travel wear is more casual, the suiter sleeve also accommodates shirts, pants and other outfits while keeping them wrinkle-free. On certain collections, it also acts as a divider, separating “his” clothing from “hers” (and “theirs”), or dirty clothing from clean, which helps you stay organized.

Travelpro’s luggage also feature many side pockets. Use them to store small items, such as belts and portable electronics, that can wrinkle clothing. And don’t forget to utilize the top lid to store shirts and other folded garments.

Common sense plays a major role in effective packing. Place heavy objects, such as shoes and toiletry kits, on the bottom of the main storage compartment, then arrange your garments on top. Pack your formal wear properly in the suiter sleeve and secure your clothing with the interior tie-down straps to prevent shifting – and wrinkling – in transit.

So, whether your travel plans involve the friendly skies or the open road, remember to take along your Travelpro rollaboard. And, if you are hitting the highway (especially with the family), feel free to take more than one.

Heavy Packing Made Easier with Large, Lightweight Luggage

June 16, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Carrying a large load? If you’re off on a longer trip and plan to pack a lot of stuff, consider the ‘Big Three’ of modern large luggage. Unlike the old days of heavyweight trunks and military-style duffels, today’s bigger bags are super lightweight and roll on wheels, just like their smaller carry-on cousins. Traveling with a full load has never been easier.

Travelpro 26" Wheeled Upright

Travelpro 26" Wheeled Upright

The Wheeled Upright

This is the most popular luggage style available today. Mid-sized wheeled uprights range from 23 inches to 26 inches and are ideal for weeklong trips. Those ranging from 27 inches to 30 inches are referred to as large wheeled uprights, perfect for packing bulky clothes. Anything over 30 inches has the potential of being charged by air carriers for being oversized. While most large uprights come with 2 wheels, spinner luggage features a 4-wheeled (or even 8-wheeled) rolling system. An excellent choice for anyone with back or mobility issues, spinners allow you to roll the bag in any direction without tilting the luggage to roll it. You can push, pull or glide bags sideways, a real convenience in crowded check-in and security lines.

The Rolling Duffel

Great for casual travel, the rolling duffel is shaped like a barrel, typically soft and available in 22, 26, 28, 30, 32 and 42-inch sizes. No longer are quality duffels designed as a long plain bag, however. Some brands include 2-inch expansions at each end for up to 20 percent more packaging space. Plus they can feature multiple exterior pockets, water bottle holders and even specially lined pockets to store cold drinks and warm food. Another innovation is the drop-bottom, which incorporates a zippered panel to create two packing spaces or one large compartment. Suffice to say; today’s duffel has come a long way in terms of maneuverability, style and functionality.

The Garment Bag

This bag is a must-have for every traveler who wants to keep their suits, dresses, and fancy outfits wrinkle free. Rolling or non-rolling, bi-fold or tri-fold, today’s garment bag comes with multiple exterior and interior pockets for organizing clothes, toiletries and electronics paraphernalia. While this bag is designed to hold typically 6 to 8 garments, smaller versions – known as suiter systems – are integrated into larger upright luggage. Removable suiters and full garment bags alike easily hang up in closets and often include storage for shoes and accessories.

A good tip to avoid oversize luggage fees: Always call your airline in advance on both size and weight restrictions before you go to the airport. Luggage restrictions vary by airline. Standard size restriction for checked baggage is 62 linear inches/157 centimeters (total length + width + height).

Innovation in both larger and smaller wheeled luggage is the hallmark of Travelpro, known worldwide as the Original Rollaboard®. Visit the Travelpro website to view Travelpro’s many lightweight, durable collections.

Travel Writer Mark Eveleigh Takes TPro Bold Bags into Chiapas Rainforest

November 10, 2010 by · 5 Comments

Mark Eveleigh is a photojournalist, adventure traveler, and book author. In fact, he is one of Press Gazette’s 50 top travel journalists. We wanted to see what Mark thought about the new rugged TPro® Bold collection from Travelpro, and whether they would stand up to the hard wear that a professional adventure traveler could give it. So we did what came naturally: gave him a couple TPro Bold bags and a Crew 8 backpack, dropped him in Chiapas, Mexico, and asked him to tell us what he found.

Here’s his latest entry from Chiapas.

The muddy water is up to thigh level and mosquitoes buzz in a hazy cloud around our heads. Things seem to be looking up: yesterday the water had been so high we had to fell trees for bridges and the mosquitoes had swarmed in masses that seemed almost solid.

Travel writer Mark Chiapas shows off his Crew 8 Backpack

Travel writer Mark Chiapas shows off his Crew 8 Backpack

The jungle is never an easy place to travel but the Lacandon rainforest in Chiapas, southern Mexico, is delivering challenges that I have not faced before. In the past few days there have been times when I’ve wondered if we have bitten off more than we could chew in this rash attempt to explore this uncharted section of jungle at the end of such a heavy rainy-season.

A few weeks earlier I had been contacted by Travelpro who was launching their TPro® Bold™ line and were keen for me to test their equipment under extreme situations on a series of very different expeditions. I knew that Travelpro bags were already the luggage of choice for the most demanding frequent fliers and that the crew of many airlines refuse to use anything else…so I was very excited to hear that they had designed a super-rugged range, ideal for the sort of expeditions and remote travel that I tend to specialise in.

As a freelance travel journalist I was setting off on a long run of assignments that would offer perfect proving ground for top quality equipment. The Chiapas expedition would be a baptism of fire, then a shorter jungle trip in Nicaragua. After that I would be travelling up the Amazon and chasing a rush of Brazilian assignments. Then it would be off to Africa for a month exploring and mapping Ghana’s national parks with a 4×4. In early 2011 I would do another ‘tour of duty’ through Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia and South East Asia.

Mark Eveleigh sporting his TPro Rolling Duffel

Mark Eveleigh sporting his TPro Rolling Duffel.

I was well aware of Travelpro’s reputation for tough, durable, user-friendly equipment and was convinced that the new, super-rugged TPro Bold equipment would live up to the sort of hammering that the next seven months on the road would hold in store.

But halfway through our trek, Chiapas is already proving tougher than I’d ever imagined. We are travelling with guides from the local Lacandon Maya community and, even with their experience and skill in jungle survival, it is hard to battle our way through the swampy forest to the mysterious island pyramid that remains sacred to their people. We cut a rudimentary boardwalk of branches to cross a swamp of sinking sand that is several metres deep and given a chance could swallow a man in moments. We cross Lacanja Lake in a leaky dugout, trying not to think about the huge alligators that are said to inhabit the lake: “oh, it’s fine,” Marcelino, our head guide, tells me optimistically, “they only come out at night.” It seems reasonable though to expect that seven of us splashing away from a sinking canoe might be cause enough for the ‘gators to make an exception!

When we arrive at the island, we hang our hammocks on top of the ancient pyramid and build a campfire under driving rain, fending off tarantulas that would like to share our shelter.

An old stock phrase in my profession has it that there are no bad experiences for a travel journalist…just good material. I begin to wonder though if this expedition is over-delivering when I am stung by a vicious tracker wasp that locks up my throat and sets my heart into overdrive with the scorpion-like venom of its sting.

The next day we are faced with another problem. Very few people have ever been to the far side of the lake and by mid-morning we are still scouting the cliff-face looking for a way up to the Sierra de Lacanja ridge. As Marcelino lowers the rope for the last of the luggage and my TPro Bold kitbag starts off on its vertical journey up to the ledge I joke that we are as good as home.
As it turns out though our cautious climb up the jungle-covered rock-face is just a practise run for still more obstacles that the gods of the Maya seem determined to place in our path. Two more days of negotiating the swamplands remain ahead and finally we will need to cross the Rio Lacanja in full flood.

No bad experiences…

“Whether your friend or family member is a frequent business traveler or they are planning for an upcoming vacation, the “2010 Holiday Gift Guide for Travelers” offers a wide variety of luggage and travel accessories that make great gifts for the holidays.” said Scott Applebee, Vice President of Marketing for the Travelpro®, Atlantic® Luggage, and Austin House™ brands.

For the frequent business traveler, the Crew™ 8 Checkpoint Friendly Computer Brief combines sophistication and functionality for the perfect holiday gift. The Checkpoint Friendly Computer Brief reduces the hassles of security checkpoints, allowing travelers to simply unzip the back of the computer briefcase and pass the bag through the X-ray machine. There is no need to remove the computer. Another great gift choice from the stylish and durable Crew 8 Collection is the 20” Wide Body Expandable Rollaboard®, designed for convenience and efficiency while travelling. This Rollaboard model contains easily accessible, large front pockets for last-minute items, a number of internal pockets for organization, and a hidden security pocket for the storage of valuables.

For the adventure traveler, the compact, durable, and ultra-portable TPro® Bold™ 30” Drop Bottom Rolling Duffel from Travelpro is the ideal gift. Whether travelling through city streets or rugged terrain, TPro Bold will make travel smooth and easy for your friend or family member’s next journey.

Austin House, a leading brand of travel accessories, features a variety of practical and cost effective items that are ideal for loved ones who are always on-the-go. The “2010 Holiday Travel Gift Guide for Travelers” includes the Austin House Flash Drive Combo Lock, which will keep your personal and business information protected while travelling. The Austin House Dual Voltage Kettle will allow your friends or family members to have their morning coffee, tea or hot chocolate wherever they are.

The Holiday Travel Guide also provides a number of stylish and useful gifts for the special woman in your life. Surprise her with the recently released Atlantic Ultra® Lite 22” Upright, a perfect gift constructed with an exceptionally lightweight honeycomb frame. Weighing just 6.5 pounds, the Atlantic Ultra Lite 22” Carry-On can be easily lifted into and out of cars and airplane overhead bins. Another great gift option for women is the AtlanticTM Insulated Lunch Totes, a fashionable collection of totes at very affordable price points. The insulation helps preserve food products for a longer period of time.

The Austin House Purse Hanger is also a must-have gift for the stylish woman. This elegant hanger can be placed on nearby tables or desks to hang your purse, keeping them safe, clean and conveniently close-by. Another gift, that will please any lady in your life, is the stunning, faux Croco collection, which includes a compact jewelry case, travel wallet and passport cover. The multi-compartment jewelry case gives you the ability to protect your rings, necklaces and even, bangles; the travel wallet has multiple interior dividers that can be used to separate currencies, docs and receipts; the compatible passport cover completes the collection.

Whether packing up for school or for their next family trip, Travelpro International offers the ECKO Unltd.® backpacks in a variety of unique styles that make great holiday gifts for the “fashionista” student. Each backpack includes features for student’s added comfort and ease, with padded carry handles and contoured, adjustable straps.
